Fische

Click on the image above to check out the video we saw in class. There are several more examples of creative work using Adobe programs at the Adobe Design Achievement Award winners.

Some of you have been using Adobe Photoshop to design your logos and posters. A couple groups have even tried using Adobe Illustrator to animate some of their work. I have located so great resources for these programs and used them to create a retro version of the Bearcat logo.

Here are the links to the tips and tutorials.

Photoshop Actions – Actions in photoshops can be used to complete a complex series of tasks with one click. You will have to download the shortcut to a folder in your Program folders. I used an Action to create the box above in one click.

Texture to Images – I used this tutorial to give my image a grainy look. Adding a textured layer with varying levels of opacity can do some interesting things to your image. You can also edit

Illustrator Tips – There are some great samples of the many things that you can do with Adobe Illustrator at this link. This includes making customized backgrounds and drawings, this could be very useful for designing your movie posters.

Yang Liu

Thanks to Mr. Kucharski for sharing the link to artist Yang Liu’s exhibit in Germany. The exhibit was designed to show the differences between German and Chinese cultures. Check out the design and consider whether these pieces encourage or demonstrate empathy. Click on the image to view the Yang Liu’s site and more of her work.

Encouraging Empathy

Great work on the logos everyone, we are in the process of installing Adobe Illustrator in the lab so we will be animating and inserting them into our films. Special thanks to our guest speaker for coming in and critiquing our logos. Please continue to post your reflections of the class on your blog. Also, feel free to post videos or images that you come across that demonstrate good design or film techniques but be sure to include an explanation of why you posted it.

Let’s continue the discussion about elements of good design as we prepare for our next project. We are going to be designing signs that can elicit a response from the reader. We will film the creative process and then the reaction that the sign has on the reader. The video above provides a neat example of people reacting to the signs. Are the signs effective and why do you think they were designed the way that they were?

Here are a couple of signs that encourage empathy. One is text based while the other is very visual. What do you think when you see these signs? What point are they trying to get across? Are they effective?

To get a better idea about signs that encourage or demonstrated empathy, have a look at this presentation. What is the difference between signs that encourage empathy and those that demonstrate it?

Please post your individual reflection on the images and videos here before Wednesday’s class. Start your comment by explaining what empathy is and answer some of the questions within your reflection.

All of your footage should be completed by the beginning of Friday’s class so that we can begin editing. We will be viewing your new logos so please have all versions posted on your blog. Here are some cool fonts and logos that I have come across that may provide some inspiration.

We will start with this original logo, looks like some advanced photoshop here. The image was found here.

Designing effective logos

Sample Logos

Let’s have a look at our blogs and think about making an effective logo. Our goal is to design a logo that represents each production crew. It should be simple and a recognizable link to your production crew. The logo will be displayed at the beginning of your movies and on your blog. We have several graphic design books in the classroom and there are some web resources listed below. Some things to consider when you are planning your logo are:

  1. Symbol – What is the shape? Are you using an existing object like a toaster or an orange or are you creating a new object? Will you use letters to form your logo?
  2. Colour – Is your logo going to be monochromatic or will it use several colours? What colour combinations are you using?
  3. Text – Does your logo require text? Does the text balance with the shape? Is your logo solely comprised of text?

Here are some additional sites to help you design your logo

This article looks at some commonly seen logos to point out some design secrets that you may not have noticed before.

This site has a good summary of the elements of design.

For those of you who didn’t see it, here is the hidden bear in the Toblerone logo. What will be hiding in your logo?

And finally, here is the logo game. Can you beat my high score of 17/20?

Stay tuned for the new logo for Procrastination Studios!
