The date for our final film festival has been set for April 30 at 3:30 in the FAT. Each Production Crew will be able to share 2 films from this half of the year. We have tentatively decided on 5 award categories for the final films:
Creativity Award
Best Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Actor/Actress
Best Picture
If you are interested in being the MC, please let me know so that we can begin planning the agenda for the afternoon. We will also need a volunteer to start designing the brochure as well. Here are some dates to keep in mind.
By April 18, each group must submit at least 1 poster design and a marketing plan that details how, when, and where we will be advertising for the festival.
By April 25, each group must submit their final video.
It is time to share the talent and start broadcasting on our blogs. The easiest way to include our videos on our blogs is to insert YouTube videos into a post. This way your blog can also act as a portfolio of your work. Before we do this, we need to set up some guidelines and check to make sure that this is acceptable under our school policy. At present, there is only one official school video posted on YouTube and you can watch it below. Once we begin posting, we will be susceptible to the same range of comments and criticisms as are found after Mr. Gelb’s video but I am confident we are mature enough to handle those situations.
There are also countless videos independently created by students that have been filmed on campus. You can find these by searching on YouTube. While these videos have been posted for personal interests and include footage, students and faculty shot on campus, we will be posting as part of our class so we will need to follow certain guidelines that match both school policy and the YouTube Terms of Service.
Be aware that agreeing to the Terms of Service grant YouTube certain rights over your videos:
“you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube’s (and its successors’ and affiliates’) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the YouTube Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each user of the YouTube Website a non-exclusive license to access your User Submissions through the Website, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such User Submissions as permitted through the functionality of the Website and under these Terms of Service.”
Are you comfortable with that?
Also, the person setting up the account needs to be over the age of 13 and you need your parent’s permission.
“You affirm that you are either more than 18 years of age, or an emancipated minor, or possess legal parental or guardian consent, and are fully able and competent to enter into the terms, conditions, obligations, affirmations, representations, and warranties set forth in these Terms of Service, and to abide by and comply with these Terms of Service. In any case, you affirm that you are over the age of 13, as the YouTube Website is not intended for children under 13. If you are under 13 years of age, then please do not use the YouTube Website. There are lots of other great web sites for you. Talk to your parents about what sites are appropriate for you.”
Some guidelines for the videos you post :
Set up the account in the name of your production company.
I will need parental permission from everyone before we begin posting.
Only be videos created by your group or containing your group members can be posted, videos that contain footage of other individuals such as the Mascot videos should not be posted.
Use only first names in your credits, edit the amount of personal information that appears in the video.
Post only appropriate comments and material through your account as it reflects on the class.
Please post any thoughts here including anything I may have missed.

In an effort to have more manageable groups, we decided to break into production crews of 4 students each. Each production crew was responsible for coming up with a name, designing a logo and managing a blog where they could report their progress and frustrations. You can visit any of the Production Crew blogs through the links on the sidebar. With the production crews up and running, each groups were given multiple assignments to work on. Great work on the logos everyone!

This is the homepage of the our Video Journalism class. News, updates and resources to help our video productions will be posted here. You can subscribe to the production crew blogs from this site. Also, feel free to visit their blogs to see the creative ideas and productions of each group. We are still working towards producing podcasts about our work and posting our videos on the sites. Stay tuned for more developments and please feel free to leave a comment.
