Our challenge for this week is to create a short film based on a Seinfeld episode. You are expected to keep the setting the same but alter the characters and the plot details. You will have one day to storyboard and script, one day to shoot and one day to edit. No double takes for this project. Here is a clip about the episode from Youtube.

We will be hosting the Grade 2 class on Friday to view their Fairytale movies and claymation videos. Please let me know if you need any help with the editing. Also you should be wrapping up work on your Genre Project for Wednesday’s class.

The TED website just released this video that shares a different interpretation of how music videos should be created as an expression of the song. What do you think of the video?

Unfortunately we only have 4 classes over the next 2 weeks due to the holidays this weekend. We had a successful meeting with the Grade 2 students who were eager to share their storyboards and act out their plays. Please arrive prepared on Wednesday and remember to bring your computers. The claymation groups will be filming in the computer lab and the plays will be filmed in the Grade 2 room using the smartboard as a background. If we work effectively, we should be able to complete filming in the one class.

The Genre Film

Filed under: Projects — dilworthm at 2:12 am on Tuesday, February 26, 2008

genre projectDescription: Create a 1 minute short that copies a famous sequence from a movie shot for shot. You must limit yourself to movie from the 21st century and they may not be scenes from a school or college. Then, you must re-write the script and make it a middle school film. Limit yourself to a maximum of three actors.

For this project, students will create a short film that not only meets illustrates a typical scene of that genre with the added twist of rewriting the setting to the middle school. It is not necessary that these films tell a complete a story; a piece of a story is sufficient, as long as there is clear evidence of genre conventions somewhere between the fade in and the fade out.

Product: At the conclusion of this project the student(s) will create a 1 minute film that mimics a scene from a particular genre in a middle school setting.

Objectives: Students will:

  • identify a scene from a particular genre
  • write a script for the scene set in the middle school
  • complete a storyboard and identify filming locations
  • film and edit their scene

Resources:

  • Imdb.com
  • Youtube

Hand in:

  • Storyboard of scene
  • Script – One page

We will spend the next week completing our empathy videos. Please use your class time wisely to plan, shoot and edit your work. Videos will be due next Wednesday, February 20th. Continue to update your blogs and post comments. We will use the online conversations to decide our next couple of projects including the mockumentary and genre spoof. Finally here is the Go around twice if you are happy video again.

For today’s class, we will start by answering these questions on your blog:

What is creativity?

What part of the brain focuses on creativity?

What are some examples of something you find creative?

How does your group come up with ideas? (e.g. discussing, drawing, showing each other examples on the web)

After answering these questions, we are going to try and re-examine our storyboards with a hands on approach. We will need scissors, marker, paper and some imagination.

Music Videos

A special thanks to Mr. O for stopping by to help us brainstorm ideas for our music videos. Here are some ideas and videos that illustrate the points we were talking about. Keep posting your reflections and ideas on you own blogs. Next class we will share our ideas and start to draw up the storyboards.

This first video is the talk from Larry Lessig. He shows 3 examples of videos that have been mashed together using existing footage. The focus is on merging existing content to create something new. The examples begin at about the 8 minute mark.

We also discussed where bands get their inspiration. The Verve’s video for “Bittersweet Symphony” was based on Massive Attack’s “Unfinished Sympathy”. There is actually an interesting story behind the Verve’s song.
